Reactions and Reviews: Issue 67/68

Terrific, as always - aside from the fiction and the plot theories, my favorite article was the wonderful piece on Nancy Barrett by the playwright in whose work she had starred. She was probably my favorite actress in the show, and I'm always eager to read about her. A shame she never comes to cons...

I also enjoyed reading my friend Janyth Thompson's account of a meeting with David Selby. He's always been my favorite male star of DS! Janyth is lucky to live in west Virginia. I may sometimes forget to say how great the artwork is in TWODS. It's always terrific, and this issue was no exception. If I have a favorite piece, I guess it's Donna DeVault Hensley's rendering of Charity and 'Pansy' on page 139. Of course, that may have something to do with my love of the character! It was also great to read the many letters on the topic of a DS movie. Whatever else is or isn't happening, Dan Curtis surely knows there's fan support out here! And I'm always interested in the MPI Videotape Reviews. Even though I only have the 1795 flashback and the later part of the show (late 1968 on), and now, the Collectors' Series. I'm afraid to buy tapes of the rest of it, because so many of the tapes are poor quality even when you buy them new, let alone after they've been sitting on a wuehouse shelf for a couple of years....Why don't we read more about the physical quality or those tapes (bend at the top)? Even the ones that are OK when I buy them deteriorate much faster than my own off-the-air tapes of shows. I can't believe MPI uses good-quality tape.

Now, to the fiction - it's all wonderful. as usual. The two serials are terrific, and I'm fascinated by the difference in styles. Sharon Wisdom's being much darker - the kind of story in which you think some of the 'good guys' may actually die - and M.L. Reid's being lighter, with some hilarious lines. (I was reading it at break in the office, and every so often I would break up, over humor I couldn't possibly explain to non-fans...) Of the other stories, my personal favorites were Terry Bowers' 'Bridging' and Terry Cogliano's 'Servitude.' 'Bridging' made me cry not only on first reading, but again on second. And 'Servitude' is just the kind of story ) love - the kind that 'explains' some part of DS we may always have wondered abollt (here, the demon bat), plus more for good measure (helps to explain Nicholas' attraction to Maggie). And the author is an artist, too! [1]
