Talk:Subtitle (titling)

I've hijacked this rather, sorry! I'm not sure whether the article works with the two dissimilar concepts schmooshed together. Should we split it, perhaps? I'm not sure what the intention of the original article was. Espresso Addict 01:58, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

My goal (which is not necessarily 'the' goal) was to explain subtitles in a non-specific context, which is exactly what you're doing. Maybe they should be separate articles? But it's not terribly long yet. Mostly I wanted to set up the potential splitting of the fansub page by video type and language and provide a neutral glossary term useable by all variations. -the old briar pipe 02:19, 20 November 2012 (UTC)
If there is a possibility of future splitting, it might be best to split early -- otherwise one ends up with potentially thousands of articles linked to the wrong title. It seems likely to me that most incoming wikilinks will be from the captioning side, so if we do go with splitting, perhaps the subsidiary title meaning could be moved and 'subtitle' be retained for the captioning meaning, for ease of linking? You have a point. We could maybe just set up a disambig page? I could change the links from the existing pages, since there are only a few. Or whatever you think best - I'm not always so good with figuring out how frequently something's going to be used. -the old briar pipe 02:40, 20 November 2012 (UTC)
I suspect both of us have a skewed perspective as to how frequently subtitle is likely to be used in the different senses -- perhaps we should wait and hope someone else comes by? Espresso Addict 02:54, 20 November 2012 (UTC)
Works for me. I also plan to bring some questions to the DW comm after getting a few more technical pages up, so I could raise the point then. -the old briar pipe 03:15, 20 November 2012 (UTC)
Chiming in on this, I'm for splitting this into two articles, maybe with this current page set up as a disambig page. I have a lot of stuff that I want to add to the captioning subtitles side of things, and things I want to link to the page, and having such unrelated things on the same page seems a little bizarre and confusing to me. Does anyone else have opinions on whether this page should be split? GoldenFalls (talk) 05:58, 21 February 2019 (UTC)
The pages should definitely be split. We could use the disambigs that Wikipedia uses. - Hoopla (talk) 06:39, 21 February 2019 (UTC)
Definitely +1 to splitting the page, and using that disambiguation convention sounds good to me. - Fandomgeographies (talk) 17:34, 21 February 2019 (UTC)
Alright, I will proceed with splitting the page! -GoldenFalls (talk) 01:49, 1 March 2019 (UTC)
Actually, I'm pretty sure I'm supposed to put AttentionGardeners and leave it up to them to move the page, since this is about splitting a page and not something more simple like changing the name of a page you created. I'll alert them and let them handle it. -GoldenFalls (talk) 02:09, 1 March 2019 (UTC)
Related thought: Fanlore doesn't seem to have a general page on Titles/Fanwork Titles, and the section on subsidiary titles doesn't seem very long right now. Would it make sense to create a page on titles and move the subtitle content there as a section? We would still need a disambiguation page either way.--aethel (talk) 02:31, 7 April 2019 (UTC)
