Sweetie Bot is a My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic fan trope in which the character Sweetie Belle is imagined as a robot. This trope originated as a joke in the MLP:FiM fan parody series Friendship is Witchcraft in November 2011, but became a fully-fleshed out Alternate Universe imagining of the character over time.
Character
Sweetie Bot first appears in FiW episode 4, "Cute From The Hip." She is similar to the original Sweetie Belle, however she is voiced with a robotic voice synthesizer and does not know that she is a robot. In FiW robots are considered deadly and dangerous, making it humorous that, despite Sweetie Bot obviously being a robot, nobody notices.
In fan depictions, Sweetie Bot is often drawn as having a large array of deadly weapons (such as missiles) or as being distraught after discovering that she is a robot. Because Sweetie Bot is, in canon, a joke character, serious depictions of her may be considered fandom unironicism.
Fandom
Fan art began to be made of Sweetie Bot almost immediately after her first appearance in episode 4 of FiW, and many fanworks and fan projects about Sweetie Bot were covered by Equestria Daily.
A Tumblr ask blog called sweetiebotreplies being started in January 2012, three months after her first appearance.[1] The ask blog continued for several years, with its last response in December 2015, featuring art of both an adult and filly version of Sweetie Bot.[2]
Another popular fanwork is a vector image of a Sweetie Bot fan design by DeviantART artist WeegeeStareAtYou. While the original image is gone from their DevaintART gallery, the vector image has been remixed and reposted several times, frequently as wallpapers, by other artists.[3]
In March 2014, a Sweetie Bot 3D model for Gmod Source Film Maker was created by DeviantART user Pika-Robo and digivee. The model went on to be used in many SFM videos on YouTube.[4] Some fan designs for Sweetie Bot may be explicitly based on the SFM 3D model by Pika-Robo and digivee.
On July 7, 2019, a 3D model of Sweetie Bot by V747 was chosen as a Daily Deviation on DeviantART, which is a prestigious award that features art chosen by staff.[5]
Officially, Sweetie Bot was referenced by WeLoveFine (rebranded later to For Fans By Fans) in a shirt showing a blueprint of Sweetie Belle with mechanical insides, however MLP:FiM may have only been licensed to WeLoveFine, making it not official Hasbro merchandise.[6]
Fanworks continue to be made about Sweetie Bot into the 2020s.
The Sweetie Bot Project and Sweetie Bot 2560
In 2014 a group of Russian bronies started the Sweetie Bot Project, a robotics project aimed at developing a quadrupedal pony robot designed to look like Sweetie Bot.[7] Though technically meant to resemble Sweetie Bot, the pony robot's shell could be designed after other ponies in the future. They began releasing videos of their prototypes and updates to YouTube starting in 2016, additionally showing the robot at My Little Pony conventions. The Sweetie Bot Project continues to reveal sparse updates as of 2023.[8][9]
A second robotics project aimed at designing a Sweetie Bot themed robot is Sweetie Bot 2560 on YouTube, starting in 2023.[10] Besides stylistic differences, the main difference between the Sweetie Bot Project and Sweetie Bot 2560 is that Sweetie Bot 2560's mobility is wheel-based.
