Starlog Salutes Star Wars was a for-profit 1987 con in Los Angeles. There were over 5000 attendees. It was the first (and only?) con attended by George Lucas.

"The highlight of the three day con was the special tribute to George Lucas himself... This was the first time Mr. Lucas had met his fans on a one-to-one basis and he was a bit overwhelmed by the love and devotion in the room." [1]

Some highlights from a con report in Comlink #30:

  • Lucas answered fans' questions such as who Yoda really was ("He's a little guy green guy with big ears. Mel Brooks thinks he's Yiddish" -- a reference to the movie Spaceballs and why he "didn't give Luke a girl" answer: "George grinned and said 'You haven't seen the last three yet!'")
  • R2-D2 and C-3PO were there
  • there were letters from the stars who couldn't be there; Carrie Fisher wrote one "forgiving George for giving her the worst hairdo in the history of film"
  • a surprise guest was Gene Roddenberry: "The applause was deafening as these two great film creators shook hands for the very first time."
  • Darth Vader came onto the stage with a birthday cake celebrating the ten year anniversary of the first film's release, R2-D2 beeped out the "Happy Birthday" song
  • there was an eight-foot tall birthday card that fans had signed; this was presented to Lucas
  • the man who played Chewbacca was there, as were reps from Disney "who gave a very in-depth presentation about the making of Star Tours"
  • "IDM reps gave several detailed slide-show presentations on the various aspects of special effects
  • all three films were shown, one each day
  • Billy Dee Williams, Peter Mayhew, and Gary Kurtz answered questions
  • fans "got a look at the making of Spaceballs"
  • Anthony Daniels "took center stage with a two hour show that had us all rolling in the aisles"
  • the Mark Hamill fan club gave a presentation
  • the "many dealers rooms had everything a Star Wars fan could hope to find" [2]
