Space Email is a website where anonymous users may send short messages, the "email" part of "Space Email" being only in name. Messages may be randomly found and read by other anonymous users by hitting the refresh button. Though not fandom-centric, Space Email has been used to roleplay as fandom characters. Anons frequently send messages while in character as a character from fandom. Users had the ability to buy an account upgrade to give themself a colored name.
History
The creator of Space Email is somewhat mysterious, unless one just so happens to visit the Tumblr page for the unofficial Space Email Tumblr theme. The galaxybuster website is full of mostly defunct links, leaving no trace of who owns the domain. Then, the button for buying a membership leads to a itch.io account called thatshelby, which then leads to a deleted Twitter called glxybstr. However, by visiting the Tumblr for the unoffical Space Email Tumblr theme, the name Shelby Smith is credited as owning and maintaining Space Email.[1] A news article about him further credits him as the creator.[2]
There was an official Space Email Tumblr created in summer 2014, which may be how the website became popular during that year. Space-email-news was short lived though, having been deleted (and re-claimed by another person) in 2015. Wayback Machine captures from 2015 show the last posts were from Nov 2014, and Shelby had been working on a mobile app for the site.
The oldest space emails are from 2013, with the majority of them being from 2014. As of Jun 2021 Space Email is still maintained. It has read "update coming soon" for several years, meaning despite remaining up and active, it may have been abandoned. Some people still utilize it in 2021, though it is rather dead.[3]
