Sonic The Hedgehog, also known as Sonic The Hedgehog (SatAM), is an animated television series based on the videogame series Sonic the Hedgehog. It was created by DIC Entertainment alongside Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog, and was notable for it's darker tone next to the other series, and it's original cast of characters that ended up also appearing in the Sonic (Archie Comics).

Canon

The plot is about Sonic and a group called the Freedom Fighters, and their attempts of overthrowing the evil Doctor Julian Robotnik, who has already conquered most of the planet Mobius, transforming it into a robotic and polluted nightmare, and turning most citizens into robots. The series was cancelled with only 2 seasons and 26 episodes, ending in a Cliffhanger.

Characters

Fanon

The show was very popular at it's first release, and continues to have a fanbase to this day. During the 90's, SatAM and the Archie Comics were the main focus of the Online Sonic space, and were the canon usually used for fanfiction. Fans of the games and the japanese media, or the "SegaSonic" fans, sometimes had fights with SatAM fans about the canonicity or quality of the show. These fights ended up stopping after the release of the Sonic Adventure games, that presented the game's japanese lore for more people and confirmed it as the "main" canon.

One very common thing in the fandom is to speculate what would have happend in season 3, research after interviews, or write and draw your own interpretation of it. Some would even try to create petitions[1] to bring the show back, though none of them had any success.

The show was also popular with the furry fandom, just like most Sonic media, with Sally Acorn in particular being considered a gateway to the fandom for many people.

The early days of fanfic also had a few Original Characters that were used by many authors, like Bookshire Draftwood (A raccoon doctor), Sandra Nightweaver (a loner spy fox) and Commander Packbell (a field commander android created by Robotnik)[2] [3].

Shipping

The most popular is the Canon ship Sonally (Sonic/Sally Acorn), which also carried over to the Archie comics. It's fans often had ship wars with fans of other couples, like Sonamy and Sonadow. Other ships are some that were popularized in the Archie Comics, like Buntoine (Bunnie Rabbot/Antoine) and Sallicole (Sally/Nicole).
