SongXueXiao is a fanon enemyslash ship based on the cultivator characters in Mo Dao Zu Shi's Yi City arc: Xiao Xingchen, Song Lan, and Xue Yang.
Canonically, Xue Yang, who is motivated by a desire for revenge, tricks a blind Xiao Xingchen into turning his best friend Song Lan into a fierce corpse. When Xiao Xingchen discovers the truth, he kills himself. Xue Yang's feelings about Xiao Xingchen are revealed to be more complicated than simple hatred as he tries and fails to bring him back as a fierce corpse.
The canon tragedy translates to a fair amount of angst in shipfic, and the fact that everyone ends up dead in canon may account for the high percentage of Modern AUs--fully half of songxuexiao AO3 fanworks are tagged with Alternate Universe - Modern Setting vs. a quarter of all Untamed fanworks and only one fifth of all MDZS fanworks.[1]
