A solo fan is a type of idol fan who stans only one celebrity, typically one member of a music group, a boygroup or girlgroup. The term is used in k-pop fandom and in Chinese-speaking fandom.

Use in Chinese fandom

In Chinese fandom, solo fans, sometimes translated as only fans or single fans, are a type of Chinese idol fan. They are fans of only one celebrity. The Chinese term is 唯粉 (wéi fěn).[1]

Some sources define wéi fěn as fans who only like one member of a music group and not the others.[2][3]

Another term for solo fans is 纯粉 (chún fěn), which means "pure fan". 提纯 (purify) is the process of cp fans becoming solo fans.[4]

Solo fans often do not get along with cp fans (shippers).[5]

Duwei are a subtype of solo fans known for extremist behavior.

A 2019 douban post asked what is the difference between various terms for fans: chún fěn, wéi fěn, dú chún, dú wéi.[6]

Use in K-pop fandom

In K-pop fandom, the term solo fan comes from the Korean 개인팬 (gaeinpaen), literally individual (개인의 gaeinui) + fan (팬 paen).[7] They are fans of an individual idol from a group, and regard the rest with little to no interest. They are generally accepted by Korean fans (as evidenced by the fact that kpop fansites are mostly run by solo stans), as long as they're not problematic (akgae)[7], but are a point of contention in Western fandom.

Solo fan is a term meant to describe harmless fans, while the problematic counterpart is called 악성개인팬 (akseonggaeinpaen) or 악개 (akgae). Akgaes are malicious fans of an individual idol from a group, that would spread misleading, defamatory rumors and false news about the other members of a group[7]; solo fans and akgaes have commonly been compared and grouped together by Western fans.[8][9][10]

Another sub-genre of solo fans is the dangerous 사생 (sasaeng) or 사생팬 (sasaengpaen), from the korean private life (사생활 sasaenghwal) + fan. They are obsessive stalkers who would try invading an idol's private life, to scare and harm them in any way they can.[11]

Although solo fans are not considered an issue in South Korea, they've received strong push-back from mostly young and new Western fans of popular groups. The Western fans' reason is mostly to preserve unity as a fandom and a fear that solo fans may cause the group to break up.[12][13][14] Some go as far as to start "mass report" parties on twitter.[15][16][17]
