The Sniper is one of the nine playable classes in Team Fortress 2.
Canon
The Sniper was born in the sunken land of New Zealand, but was accidentally sent to Australia via his biological parents' rocket ship, where he was found by his adoptive parents and raised as an Australian.
Sniper is a self-proclaimed professional, relatively quiet compared to the other mercs. However, the crude remarks he often makes towards opponents in-game, and his habit of using his own bottled urine as a weapon, show that the Sniper isn’t as clean-cut as he claims.
Fandom
While Snipers are often detested by players during matches, the Sniper character is incredibly popular in transformative works. As of December 2023, there are over 4,400 works with the Sniper character tag on AO3, more than any other character in the fandom on that site. He is also tagged in 500 works on Fanfiction.net. Fanworks often depict Sniper as something of a loner, spending much of his time away from the team in his camper van.
Pairings
Sniper is something of a fandom bicycle, being featured in several of the TF2 fandom’s most popular ships. Sniper/Spy (AKA Spyper) and Scout/Sniper (AKA Speeding Bullet) have over 900 fics on AO3 each. The pairing of Demoman/Sniper (AKA Swordvan) has over 140 fics, and is notable for being featured in the popular SFM Requiem for a Pizza: Part Two; works for this pairing often focus on supernatural themes such as cryptozoology.
