Scoopshipping is the pairing of Jack Atlas and Carly Nagisa from Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's. Jack Atlas bore the Signers mark of Crimson Dragon's wings on his right arm. In contrast, Carly bore the Dark Mark of the hummingbird when she was made a Dark Signer.

Additionally, the specific iteration of Dark Signer Carly Nagisa and Jack Atlas was called Retributionshipping but this appears to have fallen out of favour in recent fandom, with Dark-Signer-related content coming under the umbrella of the name of Scoopshipping.

As of November 2021 on Ao3, it is one of the top five ship tags in the 5D's category with the fics published as early as March 2009.

Canon

Their character arcs are closely tied together during the Dark Signer Arc with Jack's triumph against Carly in their duel redeeming her and restoring her humanity.

From the beginning of this arc, Carly had wanted to get close to Jack. She wanted the "scoop" on him as a reporter as he had lost his title as "King" but also as a self-proclaimed fan. During this endeavor to get the scoop, they had enjoyed various "dates" around town, including visiting an amusement park. However, Jack learned of Carly's motive as a reporter and was hurt when he thought that she was using their friendship to enhance her career.

When Carly became a Dark Signer and dueled Jack, Jack wanted to force a draw because he didn't want to hurt her. He believed that she was still present inside, despite being possessed by an Earthbound Immortal, so he held himself back. However, Carly overcame the forces and lost before Jack could lose. After the duel, in his arms, she professed her love for him and Jack did the same, but Carly vanished to dust. However, these scenes were heavily altered for the dub.

After Carly was revived, whilst she was vocal about her affections for Jack, Jack's own feelings towards Carly appeared to be retconned or otherwise sidelined, as he was largely indifferent to her in following episodes.

Common Storylines & Tropes

Part of the general trope makeup of this ship is the famous person/paparazzo dynamic.

Many fanworks also explores the lasting emotional affects that dying and Resurrection as a Dark Signer had on Carly and how that has impacted her relationship with Jack, making it fertile grounds for hurt/comfort and whump. Similarly, there is many an exploration into what might have happened if Jack had accepted Dark Signer Carly's invitation to rule along side her.

With the introduction of Yu-Gi-Oh! Sevens character Nico, some fans have jokingly speculated that she is a Scoopshipping child due to physical likeness to Carly and also similarity of personality. They both have black hair and thick, trifocal glasses as well as a passion for photography and news journalism: just as Carly belongs to a newspaper as a reporter, Nico belongs to the Goha Newspaper Club.
