Lady Ranni, also known Ranni the Witch and Lunar Princess Ranni, is a character in Elden Ring. She is also know as Renna, a false name she offers the Tarnished during their first meeting.

Canon

Empyrean Ranni by Dane-of-Celestia – Ranni envisioned before her physical death.

Ranni was the only known daughter born of the marriage of Queen Rennala and her consort Radagon. From a young age, she studied lunar magic under her mother, and seems to have been destined to inherit the throne over her brothers Radahn and Rykard. At some point in her youth, she was chosen as an Empyrean (a possible candidate for godhood), and as such was granted her own shadow, Blaidd the Half-Wolf. However, the fiercely-independent princess rebelled against the control of the Two Fingers, and thus sought a way to free herself from her Empyrean fate. Eventually, she conspired with the Black Knife Assassins to murder Godwyn, killing her physical body at the same time Godwyn was slain in soul. Afterward, having cast off her "Empyrean flesh," her soul inhabited a life-size, four-armed blue doll said to have been modelled after a snow witch mentor from her youth.

The player meets Ranni under the false identity of "Renna" early in the game and receives two important items from her. After travelling to Liurnia, the player can again meet Ranni and swear to serve her, aiding her quest to purge the Lands Between of the Greater Will's influence. If the player follows her questline to its end, their Tarnished will become Ranni's consort, ushering in an Age of Stars under the "wisdom of the Moon."

Common Tropes

  • Defrosting Ice Queen/Tsundere: In the game, Ranni is initially aloof, peevish, and imperious toward the Tarnished. If the player follows her questline, she will eventually warm up to them and see them as more than a means to achieve her ends, to the point she declares them a "fitting choice" for her consort and fondly calls them her "fair consort, eternal."
  • Flowery Elizabethan English: Ranni speaks an archaic and highly-formal version of English reminiscent of Shakespeare. This includes her use of the singular second-person pronoun thou, archaic verb inflections such as hath and wouldst, and archaic contractions such as ne'er and wint'ry. Works of fan fiction featuring Ranni often try to replicate this manner of speech.
  • Fiery Redhead: May sometimes fit this trope despite existing in the form of a large blue doll in the game. Although it is unknown what colour her hair was before her physical death, it is a common fanon theory that she inherited her father Radagon's famous red hair, as it is known her brother Radahn (depicted in a portrait at Volcano Manor) and half-sister Malenia did. The charred remains of her physical body found atop the Divine Tower of Liurnia also appear to have reddish hair.
  • Rebellious Princess: Ranni is seemingly the crown princess of the Carian royal family (it is implied to practice female-preference succession) and determined at a young age that she would not submit to the fate chosen for her by the Two Fingers.
