Canon

Fandom

While the Pluto Knights do not often appear as main characters in fanworks (with the exception of Captain Steiner), they sometimes appear as supporting characters in fanworks for the pairing Steiner/Beatrix, usually playing a role (intentional or otherwise) in Steiner and Beatrix getting together.

In roleplay communities for Final Fantasy IX, such as those on FinalFantasyForums.net, occasionally people would have their original character join the Pluto Knights as the unnamed 10th member. This offered a way of integrating an OC immediately into either events of the story or within the existing lore of FFIX, while the relatively small role played by the Pluto Knights (excluding Steiner), offered the freedom for character exploration and new story-lines. Some role-playing took place in time periods before or after FFIX, and that would offer a group of completely unnamed characters within the Pluto Knights to insert OCs into.

There was some heated fandom discussion about whether the members of the Pluto Knights were allusions to previous Final Fantasy games, including some discussions about how the links to previous main characters were more apparent in the Japanese release of FFIX[1]. For example, fans felt that Weimar's character flirting with a woman selling flowers and then spending time with a different woman at a pub was a reference to Cloud, Aerith, and Tifa from Final Fantasy VII. Many other fans were unconvinced by the evidence provided for the claims, though some of the allusions were retained on the wiki[2].

The cosplay group, Pluto Knights, took their name from the in-game group and their first cosplay was of Zidane and Blank's Pluto Knight disguises from the beginning of FFIX.
