One Day at a Time is a Netflix original series and re-imagining of Norman Lear’s classic 1975–84 sitcom, One Day at a Time.
Overview
Penelope Alvarez, a newly single Army Nursing Corps veteran is raising her two children, Elena and Alex, with the support of her colorful Cuban mother, Lydia. They live together in an apartment building owned by their landlord Schneider, a grown up lonely rich kid and recovering addict, who would like nothing more than to be part of the family.
Penelope works as a nurse for Dr. Leslie Berkowitz, providing her with a regular shift so she can return home to her loving family at the end of the day. However, the return to civilian and family life has been difficult, as Penelope finds herself dealing with the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder and a lingering shoulder injury from her time in the army. She also begins the series recently separated from her husband Victor, another veteran who has not been dealing well with his own PTSD.
Over the course of the series, it deals seriously with themes of coming out, depression, anxiety, addiction, and citizenship, all while maintaining its sitcom format with heart and humor.
