Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is a 2019 film directed by Quentin Tarantino, a homage to his childhood memories of Hollywood's golden age.
The two main characters are actor Rick Dalton and his stunt double Cliff Booth, played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt respectively. These long-term friends and work partners are almost inseparable, and the buddy relationship with narcissistic undertones lends itself to slash fanfiction. Of the current 312 works on AO3 for this fandom, 255 are tagged Cliff Booth/Rick Dalton and 43 are tagged Cliff Booth & Rick Dalton.[1]
Interestingly, the film includes a Real Person Fiction storyline featuring the real life characters of Sharon Tate (played by Margot Robbie) along with other Hollywood celebrities, as well as members of the Manson Family. The fictional Rick Dalton is Sharon Tate's neighbour; the presence of Dalton and Cliff Booth changes the end of Tate's story in ways similar to fix-it fanfiction.
Novelization
In 2021, Tarantino published the tie-in novel Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.[2] A sequel called The Films of Rick Dalton has been announced but not published yet.[3]
