The New One Direction Big Bang aka One Direction Big Bang is a big bang challenge in the One Direction fandom that was started in 2017, with completed fanworks for the first round posted in 2018. It is still going as of 2022. The founders said that they created it to be a larrie-friendly alternative to the existing big bang challenge, 1d bigbang.

This Big Bang was created because the original Big Bang creators (and a lot of its participants) said that Larries weren’t welcome and were quite insulting towards that section of the fandom.

In this Big Bang, nobody’s left behind. The only premise is to be respectful.[1]

The rules likewise note that,

It’s also important to be prepared going into this with the knowledge that the person you collaborate with may not have the same beliefs as you. We expect everyone to treat each other with respect and kindness.[2]

Challenge History

The new big bang is organized on tumblr, and finished works are posted to an AO3 collection (New One Direction Big Bang).

The first tumblr post was on October 31, 2017[3] and signups for the first round were opened on November 3[4]. The minimum wordcount is 25,000. It was first moderated by LadyLondonderry and beccasafan. In Round Four Lululawrence joined the team.

  • Round One: Signups opened November 3, 2017. On April 11, 2018, completed fanworks started posting. There were 25 fics posted in Round 1 and all of them included Larry Stylinson even though some also included Louis Tomlinson and Harry Styles in other pairings as well. 22 fics had Larry Stylinson as the main pairing. One fic had Ziam as the main pairing, and one fic had Diana/Olivia (both OC characters based on One Direction songs) as the main pairing. The last chance to post a fic was June 2, 2018.
  • Round Two: The sign ups for Round Two opened on October 1, 2018. @1dbigbang was no longer active at this point. On April 12, 2019 the fics for Round Two started posting. There were 43 posts and over 3/4 had Larry Stylinson as a ship. 40 fics had Larry Stylinson as the main pairing. One fic had Ziam as the main pairing, one fic had Stylinshaw as the main (poly) pairing, and one fic had Lilo as the main pairing.
  • Round Three: The sign ups for Round Three opened on October 1, 2019. The fics began posting on April 12, 2020. 48 works were submitted and all but one had Larry Stylinson listed as a relationship. 44 fics had Larry Stylinson as the main pairing. 3 fics had Ziam as the main pairing. One fic had Ziall as the main pairing.
  • Round Four: The Round Four sign ups opened on October 3, 2020. The fics began posting on April 12, 2021. 37 works were submitted. 36 fics had Larry Stylinson as the main pairing. One fic had Ziam as the main pairing.
  • Round Five: Signups opened October 2, 2021. 24 fics were scheduled to begin posting on April 11, 2022.[5] As of 2023, the AO3 collection featured 20 fics, 19 of which were tagged with Harry/Louis.
  • Round Six: Signups opened October 1, 2022.
