New Amsterdam is a TV medical drama centered on New Amsterdam Hospital in New York City, the oldest public hospital in the US, based on the book Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital by Eric Manheimer.
Canon
Max Goodwin is hired as the new Medical Director of New Amsterdam, and he is determined to reform the hospital by placing patient care above everything else. He adopts the slogan, "How can I help?". Max's mission is initially put in jeopardy when he is diagnosed with cancer. The series is centered around several doctors at the hospital and their interactions with each other and with their patients. These doctors include: Helen Sharpe head of the Oncology and Hematology Department, Floyd Reynolds head of Cardiac Surgery, Lauren Bloom head of the Emergency Department, Iggy Frome head of the Psychiatry Department, and Vijay Kapoor head of the Neurology Department.
