Junji Ito (伊藤 潤二, Ito Junji) is a Japanese horror manga creator known in the west for his series Uzumaki and Tomie and his short stories, including the viral/memetic short manga The Enigma of Amigara Fault. A former dentist, Junji Ito also loves cats and has a friendly and kind persona in interviews, which fans often contrast with Hayao Miyazaki's more pessimistic approach to media.

Meme contrasting Junji Ito and Miyazaki.

A number of panels from several of Ito's manga have gone viral as memes and spread well beyond fans of Junji Ito or horror manga. Ito himself has a cult following, both for his works themselves and for the contrast between the grim horror of his stories and the positivity, even goofiness, of his public persona.

Junji Ito's Cat Diary, in particular, remains popular on Tumblr.

About Junji Ito Himself:

It's really cool that one of Japan's most prolific horror writers is such a wholesome good boy. Similarly, the late Kentaro Muira was also really chill even though Berserk is some of the darkest, edgiest, brutalest shit to ever be put to paper.

Meanwhile, Hayao Miyazaki is like the embodiment of "angry old man" even though most of his movies are about young girls going on magical adventures in idyllic countrysides (sometimes with fantastic flying machines). To be honest, I think that's cool too.
