Janeway/Seven is the main femslash pairing of the Star Trek: Voyager fandom. Their relationship is one of mentor and student but also of equals because Seven of Nine is the only one who exists to some degree outside the chain of command and can meet Janeway on her own terms. Janeway shows the former Borg what it means to be human and Seven challenges Janeway and makes her live her own lessons.

Fandom

Xena heritage

On some author sites J/7 fanfiction is labeled alt which shows that several Janeway/Seven authors came to Voyager from Xena fandom and brought their terminology with them. Several J/7 stories were reviewed on Xena/Gabrielle review sites and another example of the close connection between J/7 and X/G is the genre of uber fiction with some J/7 novels such as Course of Action by Gun Brooke getting published with the serial numbers filed off.[1] [2]
