The Goth Family are a playable family in the video game franchise The Sims. The Goths are most likely the most famous family in the franchise and have appeared in the original The Sims, The Sims 2, The Sims 3, and The Sims 4. The family consists principally of husband, Mortimer Goth, wife Bella Goth (née Bachelor), and their children, Cassandra Goth and Alexander Goth; however, Mortimer's parents, Gunther Goth and Cornelia Goth, also appear as playable characters in Old Town in The Sims and Sunset Valley in The Sims 3, and a number of other members of the family appear as ghosts in various games. The Goths are known for the gothic appearances of the characters and architecture of their homes.

Canon

The Sims

Mortimer and Bella live with their daughter, Cassandra, at 5 Sim Lane in Neighborhood 1. Mortimer is a Test Subject in the Science career. In The Sims: Unleashed, Gunther and Cornelia also appear living in Old Town at 77 Maple Street.

The Sims 2

In the intervening years between the original Sims game and the sequel, Mortimer and Bella had one more child, Alexander, and moved the family to 165 Sim Lane in Pleasantview. Shortly before the start of The Sims 2, Bella was abducted by aliens and disappeared; a clone of her (without her relationship history or family tree) can be found as a Townie in Strangetown. Also prior to the events of The Sims 2, Mortimer became a Mad Scientist and began dating Dina Caliente, and Cassandra, now an adult, got engaged to Don Lothario.

The Sims 3

In this prequel to the original Sims game, Mortimer is a child living at 13 Skyborough Boulevard in Sunset Valley with Gunther and Cornelia. Bella is also a child and lives with the Bachelor family. In The Sims 3: Supernatural, three ghosts--Samuel, Frida, and Olivia Goth--appear living with human Helen Hall in Moonlight Falls.

The Sims 4

In this alternate universe, Mortimer, Bella, teen Cassandra, and child Alexander appear living together for the first time in any Sims game. They reside at Ophelia Villa in Willow Creek, where Mortimer is a Freelance Article Writer and Bella is an Intelligence Researcher.

The Goth family as originally created in The Sims 4 drew criticism for whitewashing the characters, who appeared with somewhat darker skin tones in previous games (especially Bella). Maxis responded by redesigning the family's appearances--including to give them darker skin tones--in a "Sims Delivery Express" drop released shortly after patch 129.

Fandom

As is common in The Sims fandom, fans often tell stories on sites like LiveJournal and Tumblr using screencaps taken in-game as they play. Particularly in The Sims 4, it's also very common to see fans create their own makeovers of the Goth family available for other players to download and use in place of the default version in the game, even after Maxis itself redesigned the family in response to criticism.

Meta & Discussion

So The Sims team has updated the Goths in The Sims 4 after years of people either not playing them at all or giving them their own great makeovers.

I'm sorry to say, but the devs didn't understand the assignment.

This is a completely different family now. They took this mixed Caucasian-Mediterranean family and thought "let's make them Indian just because".

Bella and Cassandra now have an ashy and sickly skintone instead of something warm as they used to in previous games.

Mortimer now looks like Dick Dastardly (yes, I also said it on Reddit).

And Alexander? Holy hell, he looks like a bastard child of Bella with some in-game generated townie.

I applaud them for at least trying to fix up the classic premades, but you don't go from one inaccuracy to another. That's not how it works.
