Yamamoto/Gokudera is the pairing of Yamamoto Takeshi and Hayato Gokudera from Katekyo Hitman Reborn!.

The two are main characters in the series and Guardians of the Vongola Famiglia (the Rain Guardian and Storm Guardian, respectively). They have a stark contrast of personalities, with Yamamoto being eternally upbeat and cheerful, while Gokudera is hot-headed and irritable with a short fuse. Gokudera also considers Yamamoto to be his rival for the position of right-hand man to Tsuna, although this is largely a one-sided rivalry. After Yamamoto reprimands Gokudera for this attitude (and his over-protectiveness towards Tsuna), Gokudera becomes more self-aware and forms closer relationships with the other Guardians, including Yamamoto.

The dynamic between Yamamoto and Gokudera gives fans plenty of material for headcanons and fanworks in which the rivalry between the two develops into something more. Jealous!Gokudera is a popular trope, as Yamamoto is canonically popular with girls (as is Gokudera, although he is more hostile to this attention). The Ten Years Later arc also features prominently in Yamamoto/Gokudera fanworks, in which Yamamoto and Gokudera travel forward in time and discover that their future selves are lovers.

Per the numerical system used for most ships in KHR fandom, Yamamoto/Gokudera is also referred to by fans as 8059 or 5980. Whichever number appears first typically denotes who tops in a given fanwork, so 8059 is generally top!Yamamoto and bottom!Gokudera, while 5980 is top!Gokudera and bottom!Yamamoto. Fans may use 805980 to denote that the pair switch, or else use 8059/5980 to denote that there is no particular top/bottom emphasis in the fanwork in question.

Popular Tropes

  • Ten Years Later: During the arc in which the characters travel ten years into the future, fans imagine Gokudera and Yamamoto discovering that their future selves are lovers. Alternatively, one or both halves of the pairing swaps places with their older/younger self thanks to the Ten Year Bazooka, often winding up in the midst of a compromising situation.
  • Gokudera Speaking Italian: Fans often incorporate Gokudera speaking Italian to Yamamoto, for example by having Yamamoto ask Gokudera to teach him some Italian (or ask him how to say a certain phrase in Italian), whereupon Gokudera will say something romantic without Yamamoto knowing.
  • Studying Together/Tutoring: Gokudera excels academically, so fanworks often feature him tutoring Yamamoto (sometimes reluctantly, or at the request of Tsuna) or the two studying together.
  • Gokudera Plays the Piano/Musician!Gokudera: In canon, Gokudera is a talented pianist, although he hates to play the piano. Fanworks often feature him playing for Yamamoto, or in AUs, Gokudera may be a professional musician or composer while Yamamoto is a famous baseball player.
  • Baseball: Gokudera mocks Yamamoto for his love of baseball in canon, calling him "yakyu baka" or "baseball idiot/nut". However, in shippy fanworks Gokudera often attends Yamamoto's matches to support him (usually while concealing how much he enjoys watching Yamamoto's love for the sport).
  • Jealousy: Jealous!Gokudera is a popular trope, usually resulting from Yamamoto responding to attention from girls or getting a girlfriend (who is typically an OC). Jealous!Yamamoto might also appear with Yamamoto being jealous over Gokudera's closeness with Tsuna, perceiving it (correctly or incorrectly) to be the result of a crush.
