Fic In A Box is a gift exchange in which participants agree to produce a total of at least 10K of fanfic or the equivalent. They are permitted to split this total word count across as many works as they want. The minimum per work is 1k by default, but lower wordcount works are allowed if the recipient has opted into receiving them.
While Fic In A Box is primarily a fic focused exchange, there are opt-ins for pretty much any medium, for each of which a fanfic equivalence is calculated so that the 10K total can be established as fulfilled.
Unusually, Fic In A Box also allows the option of "swaps", where any participant who wishes may trade in part of their assignment for 1k increments of other people's assignments. This is optional, which means that participants are not required to give up any part of their assignment; nor can a desired swap be guaranteed.
Participants who find they cannot complete the full 10k but have nevertheless created one or more complete works are permitted to default on just the remaining wordcount. In such a case, they are guaranteed to receive gift(s) equivalent to the amount submitted (rounded down to the nearest 1k). There are also options to "earn back" guaranteed minimum amount by taking pinch hits or completing the original assignment.
