Characters

Euphemia li Britannia is the third princess of the Britannian Imperial Family. Unlike most of her family members, she is kind-hearted and patient, and is sympathetic towards the Japanese. She serves as the Sub-Viceroy of Area 11 during the season one.

Nina Einstein is a student at Ashford Academy. She has high intelligence but is very timid and displays an intense fear of the Japanese. It is not known exactly where her fear of the Japanese comes from, but it is implied that she was "assaulted" in some way by Japanese citizens living in the ghettos of Area 11.

In Canon

Prior to their first meeting, Nina had developed an admiration for Euphemia due to her service as Sub-Viceroy. It is implied she had minor parasocial romantic feelings for Euphemia during this time.

At the Lake Kawaguchi Convention Center Hotel, Euphemia and Nina are taken hostage along with a group of tourists by the Japan Liberation Front. Nina mistakenly refers to a member of the Japan Liberation Front as an "eleven." This greatly offends the member and leads to him threatening her. Euphemia interferes, revealing her identity. When the hostage situation is resolved, Euphemia asks Nina if she is alright. It is after this that Nina's feelings for Euphemia develops into an obsession.

Nina is determined to thank Euphemia for saving her back at the hotel. Discovering that Euphemia was currently at the Clovis Memorial Museum, Nina rushes to the museum and attempts to bypass the police guarding the hotel but fails and is threatened to be arrested for trespassing. Euphemia is alerted to the incident, recognizes Nina from the hostage incident at the hotel, and demands that the police let Nina free, saying that she is a friend of hers. Euphemia takes Nina to her home, where Nina thanks her for saving her. Euphemia appreciates her admiration but tells Nina that she isn't as special as she is believed to be. Nina compares herself to Euphemia, stating that she is "nothing" since she is not pretty and not royalty. The two realize they have more in common than they thought, and Euphemia tells Nina that she is glad to have befriended her.

In Season 1, Episode 12, Nina is shown masturbating to a picture of Euphemia, further emphasizing her reliance on Euphemia for her emotional stability.

When Lelouch accidentally activates his Geass on Euphemia during the opening ceremony of the Special Administrative Zone of Japan, she calls for a massacre on the Japanese people, leading to the deaths of hundreds. Nina, not aware of the Geass' influence, is disturbed by Euphemia's decision, but resolves to support her regardless. Euphemia is injured during the event and eventually succumbs to her injuries, causing Nina to experience a sort of psychiatric break.

Nina remains loyal to Euphemia even after her death, vowing to get revenge by defeating Zero. She develops the F.L.E.I.J.A, a weapon of mass destruction to be used by the Britannian military. During the Second Assault on the Tokyo Settlement, 25 million people are killed by the F.L.E.I.J.A, giving Nina an immense feeling of guilt and regret for building the weapon. After reluctantly siding with Zero and discovering him to be Lelouch, she tells him that though she will never forgive him for his role in Euphemia's death, she is willing to fight for Japan's freedom. Towards the end of the series, Nina's intense feelings for Euphemia subside somewhat.

Fandom

Euphemia/Nina is a rather unpopular pairing in the fandom, despite the implications towards it in canon. Nina's poor reception by viewers of the anime could have contributed to this, as well as the semi-canon pairing of Suzaku/Euphemia.
