Emo Kylo Ren is a parody Twitter account ostensibly written by Kylo Ren in a Star Wars sequel trilogy modern AU. Peaking at over 900,000 followers in January 2018, it was largely responsible for popularizing the fanon of the character as an angsty emo teenager.[1]

In a 2018 interview with SyfyWire, Alexandra Petri, a columnist for the Washington Post revealed she was the blog's creator.[2]

Origins

"I left the theater after Force Awakens thinking, 'This guy is clearly ridiculous,'" Petri told SYFY WIRE. "I waited a while and [the internet] still wasn't full of jokes about how ridiculous Kylo Ren was, and that was the only content I wanted to consume. So, finally, I was like, 'I need to be the change I want to see in the world.' So I started the account. Because I just had so many jokes about this guy."[3]

Sample Tweets

Many tweets begin with the phrase "dear diary," and discuss Kylo's personal thoughts and musings, while others are pick-up lines directly addressed to would-be love interest Rey, comments to his friend Hux, or complaints about his mother Leia Organa (especially for favoritism towards Poe Dameron), his father Han Solo, or his uncle Luke Skywalker. Occasionally, he will respond to other Star Wars parody Twitter accounts, such as Very Lonely Luke.

you can't truly appreciate the imperial march until you hear it on vinyl[4]

dear diary

today’s skype was not productive

she could clearly tell that the swelling love theme whenever she spoke was just me playing the oboe even though i made very few mistakes[7]

no hux

i definitely have a girlfriend we speak with our minds she has a magic cave where she does syncopated snapping and she’s super good with a lightsaber and like so strong with the force no i don’t know her last name

but she definitely isn’t made up[8]

Shipping

Although the Kylo Ren persona in the account is strongly in favor of Reylo, Petri herself does not ship this pairing:

"I'm like, internet, this isn't a meet-cute. You can all do so much better than somebody who abducts you. Just because we call it a bridal carry doesn't mean it's okay. All these teens were sending me videos of them playing the oboe and I'm like, 'You can all do better. You deserve a nice man.' Then we get into the Han Solo, 'I'm a nice man' nonsense. Find a good supportive fellow instead!""[9]
