Doki Doki Literature Club is a 2017 visual novel by Team Salvato. Though presented as a dating simulator with a cutesy, moe aesthetic, it is actually a psychological horror game, making it popular for Let's Players and livestreamers due to the twist and sudden mid-story shift in tone. Characters include club president Monika, childhood friend Sayori, the shy Yuri, and the assertive Natsuki.

Several elements of the game break the fourth wall, including hidden messages in certain game files teasing a 2018 game which remains unreleased, as well as hooks for another unknown project.

In the game, you are invited by Sayori, your childhood friend, to join a literature club at school. There you meet Yuri, Natsuki and Monika, the president of the club. All the girls are romanceable, except Monika. On the "create a poem" minigame, you can select words that resonate most with Sayori, Yuki, or Natsuki, leading you down their "path".

The game is presented in three acts.

An expansion, Doki Doki Literature Club Plus!, was released in 2021, adding extra lore and content to the game.

• Sayori, she's Main Ccharacter childhood friend and vicepresident of the Literature Club. She's lively, energetic and enthusiastic, also a little bit clumsy. Sayori is a beloved character in the fandom. People's general opinion about her is that she is cute and adorable, cares about everyone and just wants everyone to be happy despite her depression and her smile being a facade. Fans admire her for always trying her best. Her fans call themselves Sayorians.
• Natsuki, is a tsundere. She always speaks her mind and some fans think her temperament is annoying. Others consider her to be underrated and claim that her poems are the best, and she has more relatable problems and hobbies than the other girls. Her fans call themselves Natsukians.
• Yuri, is a tall, shy, mature girl. One of the most popular girls. Some fans claim that she is popular because she is busty and that she is overrated. People that like her, do it because of her gentle nature and intelligence. People that dislike her, do it because she is obsessive and has unsettling hobbies. Her fans call themselves Yurians.
• Monika, she is the girl with the highest amount of haters but also devoted fans. People who like her, do it because she is a complex and flawed character. People who dislike her, do it because she is creepy and insane and a stalker. Her fans call themselves Monikers.

Fandom Controversy

Trapsuki Meme

The meme originated on the Steam forums early on which contained a picture analyzing Natsuki's physical traits to prove she was born male. The meme spread across different social media. Dan Salvato, tweeted saying that all characters in DDLC are biologically female and that the meme was disrespectful and had to stop.
