Coulson Lives is a fan movement related to reversing the death of Agent Phil Coulson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

History

In May 2012, after Phil Coulson's death in The Avengers (2012), a fan campaign quickly arose to bring Coulson back. The first fan page devoted to the cause of resurrecting Coulson, an alternate reality game called the Coulson Lives Project, began on May 7, three days after the US release of the film. Within the first few days, Clark Gregg, the actor portraying Agent Coulson, became involved in the project via twitter. In the coming months, fans began tagging different locations, both online and off, with the hashtag #coulsonlives. Representatives from the fandom also participated in events and meet-ups at conventions, including marching in the annual Dragon*Con parade.[1]

On October 13, 2012 at New York Comic Con, it was announced that Agent Coulson would be returning for the upcoming ABC series Agents of SHIELD, the creators having directly acknowledged the role of fans in bringing Coulson back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.[2][3] On that day, #coulsonlives also trended on twitter.[4]

Coulson Lives can be interpreted as a subset of the "uncancelled" phenomenon, wherein fan response causes top-down changes in a property.
