Charlie/Mac is considered one of the more wholesome and less problematic pairings in the IASIP fandom. For a time, Charmac was the most popular pairing in this fandom. By the end of 2014, Mac/Dennis had overtaken it to become the most popular pairing and, as of 2018, Charmac is the third most popular pairing, as other ships perceived to be endgame have grown in popularity.

• Childhood friends to lovers - Many fics pairing Charlie and Mac are pre-canon works set before they met the gang. These works focus on their childhood friendship and sometimes include the two beginning a relationship as teenagers. Other works examine the two beginning their sexual relationship in adulthood, with Mac's internalized homophobia and Charlie's drug dependencies often featuring.
