Subcategories by Vidder

What do you think of having a Vidders subcategory, cross-categorized under Fans? Currently, there are some fans in the Vidding category, but it seems weird to categorize people as an activity. And if there are also pages about AMV editors, should we have a more general term, like video editors, as the category name?

We could also have a Fan Writer category.--æthel 22:28, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

Subcategories by Fandom

We currently have 3 subcategories for fanvids by fandom: Merlin (60 vids), SGA (13) and SG1 (24). So I am thinking that as soon as we get 10 or more vids in one fandom, we should create a vidding fandom subcategory. For example, we have enough multi-fandom vids to create their own subcategory (see list below)--MeeDee 18:23, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

Created a test subcategory for Multimedia vids and applied it to one sample vid. Have sent a message up to the Gardeners list for feedback. --MeeDee 23:00, 24 November 2011 (UTC)
Multimedia Vids looks fine to me!--æþel 23:45, 24 November 2011 (UTC)
Any chance we can call them "Multifandom Vids" instead of "Multimedia Vids"? Continuing and/or extending the use of "multimedia" as preferred synonym for "multifandom" seems potentially exclusionary, as "multimedia" used that way does not have wide currency as a term outside very specific (small?) parts of fandom and may feel newbie-unfriendly, whereas "multifandom" (or "multisource") are more self-explanatory and unlike "multimedia" don't have a competing meaning that is widely understood outside of (corners of) fandom to be something different. /$0.02 --Sk 00:11, 25 November 2011 (UTC)
Oh, good point, Sk. We have a few categories for "multimedia zines", but those could be interpreted to mean media fanzines that were actually labeled "multimedia" at the time. In contrast, we have a Multifandom Archives category, and I don't recall seeing any vids recently labeled "multimedia". [1]--æþel 02:21, 25 November 2011 (UTC)
I think "multimedia" as (primarily) used in zine culture is important historical usage and valuable to note, but current-day usage in fandom of "multimedia" seems more in line with nonfannish usage of the term (multiple source forms or formats not just multiple sources (e.g. fandoms) in the same format (e.g. live action video footage even if from different shows). When I remember to in running across examples, I'll try to flag stuff that might have confused newbies-like-me (as someone without long fannish history) on first finding fanlore. :) --Sk 02:38, 25 November 2011 (UTC)

Seconded. There may be zine era vids that were referred to as multimedia vids at the time, but the newer vids are multifandom vids and calling them multimedia is misleading because that's a medium were multimedia has much stronger multiple media assocciations. If there are enough vid pages, we could maybe have both a Category:Multifandom Vids and Category:Multimedia Vids (Zine Era) but right now only some of the multifandom vids with Fanlore pages were ever considered multimedia vids by their fandoms at the time. --Doro 02:58, 25 November 2011 (UTC)
I think that multifandom vids would be more encompassing (most vid shows still label them as multi-media but this is a hold over from the Before Times Zine Era. I like the idea of making the concept clearer to a wider range of visitors. So I'll change it to multifandom and will start applying the category after I add a few more vids (I am working my way through another 20 or so so we'll be at or over 15 by the end of this weekend) --MeeDee 05:03, 25 November 2011 (UTC).
Multifandom vid categories is typically applied to vids that contain source from more than one fandom. Applying the category to vid collections (DVDs/tapes with single fandom vids) is inconsistent with how the term is used both historically and currently. I'd suggest removing the Multifandom Vid category from the single fandom (each vid uses only one fandom source) songtape collections and go with Doro's suggestion below of making a sub-category for DVD/songtape collections (subcategory under Vidding). Thoughts?--MeeDee 02:58, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
Sounds good to me. What would you call it? --Tiyire 10:46, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
According to our policies/help guidelines, fandom subcategories can be created when there are 15 pages for such a subcategory and it doesn't leave the parent category (almost) empty. I've always interpreted that as 15 pages or files and it has worked so far for me. --Doro 02:58, 25 November 2011 (UTC)

General Question About Vidding Subcategories

I note that because the Vid template automatically assigns the vidding category to each vid page, that when we finally do create a vidding subcategory and apply it, the vid still remains listed in the vidding category page. This may make the vidding category unwieldy as we keep adding more and more vids. Any thoughts?--MeeDee 18:26, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

I've also been wondering about this, since the same thing is happening in Category:Doujinshi and probably other categories as well. Proposal: perhaps we could create an alternate vid/doujinshi/whatever template that would be identical to the original except that it doesn't automatically add the main category. It would be used on the pages that have been added into subcategories, so they're not listed in both main and sub categories, which would free up the main category of all the subcategorized pages that currently fill it. It wouldn't be linked from the main template list to avoid it being accidentally used, and/or it would have a big "If you don't know which template to use, use the other one," to avoid pages being created without categories. Thoughts, input, rotten vegetables used as projectiles? -- Kylara 03:47, 23 April 2012 (UTC)

Subcategory

Now that we have a subcategory for vids and have cleaned up the vidding category, I think it would be a good idea to have a subcategory and template for vid compilations/collections such as songtapes and DVDs. Thoughts? --Doro 14:15, 25 June 2012 (UTC)

Moving the chat from above down here. I am terrible at naming categories. perhaps: Category: Vid Collections (because we have both videotape and DVDs). Or Category: Vid Compilations? Keep in mind that convention vid show tapes/DVDs could fall in this group as well.--MeeDee 14:35, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
