AlMei is the het ship between Alphonse Elric and May Chang (more commonly spelled "Mei Chang" or "Mei Chan" in Western fandom since the release of the 2009 anime) in the fandom Fullmetal Alchemist.

Canon

Mei Chang does not exist in the 2003 anime, but she is a major supporting character in the manga and Brotherhood.

When Mei first arrives in Amestris on her quest for an elixir of immortality, she hears of the deeds of Edward Elric and imagines him as a dashing prince. Upon meeting the Elrics, she decides that Edward is a terrible gremlin but Al is in fact princelike, and transfers her admiration to him. This is often played up for humorous exaggeration, but they grow to be close friends across their adventures, and Mei is present in the Elric-Rockbell family photo seen in the epilogue.

Fandom

AlMei is moderately popular within the fandom. In fanfic, it is often included as a background ship in works focused on more popular ships, particularly EdWin and RoyEd. In these fics, it's common to see AlMei characterized as the boring, goody-two-shoes couple to contrast with whatever shenanigans Ed gets up to.

Common tropes:

  • futurefic: imagining their future together post-canon. Two common trends are that Al goes to Xing as a doctor, royal guest, or ambassador, or else that Mei renounces her royal titles and goes to live in Amestris.
  • marriage, kidfic
  • culture and language sharing: Al learning Xingese, and the couple teaching both languages and cultures to their children. Sometimes this also includes Al learning more about his Xerxian heritage, and teaching that to their children.
