RoyEd or Roy Mustang/Edward Elric is a slash ship in Fullmetal Alchemist fandom.
Canon
Edward and Roy met the first time when Roy arrived in Resembool on an inaccurate tip regarding possible State Alchemist candidates. Upon discovering the bloody remains of the brothers' failed Human Transmutation, Roy confronted Edward and persuaded him to consider joining the State Alchemist program as a means to perhaps restore his limbs and his brother's body someday. Afterward, twelve-year-old Edward traveled with Roy to Central City to apply for his state certification.
Officially, Roy is Edward's superior officer, but their relationship is nothing but typical professional connections. There is an amicable animosity between them, whereas Roy takes pleasure in teasing Edward, and watching him squirm under his orders, at the same time Edward takes pleasure in getting around his orders and showing Roy up whenever he manages to find an opportunity. Despite their mutual dislike every time they see each other, Roy and Edward also hold a great deal of respect for one another. Roy genuinely wishes to see Edward's goal fulfilling and Edward also subtly supports Roy to become the Führer and improve the country. Their personalities are quite similar and complement each other, both being fond of boasting of their own abilities, but willing to do anything to protect their loved ones.
Controversy
Due to the age gap in the canon narrative, the ship has garnered some negative feedback, enough for Tumblr users to write posts[1] defending the ship. Nevertheless, it is the second most popular ship in the Fullmetal Alchemist - All Media Types tag on Archive of Our Own, as of October 26th, 2022, with 4063 works tagged out of 22635 total.
