Ever since the mid 1990s, digitial 3D modeling has been a fannish activity. In the 2000s, 3D models in fandom became widespread due to popular programs such as MikuMikuDance, asset ripping, and massive multiplayer online social spaces such as Garry's Mod. In the 2020s, the accessibility of 3D printing made it so fans could produce models for others to print, and sometimes to buy.

Popular fandoms for 3D modelists include the furry fandom, video game fandom cartoon fandom and anime fandom.
