/a/ is one of the oldest boards on 4chan. While /a/ was originally designated "anime/general", the addition of new boards allowed /a/ to be dedicated solely to anime. Many people in the fansub and scanlation communities hang out there.
History
Upon 4chan's founding on October 1, 2003, there was only one board: /b/ - Anime/Random. As the site grew, several new boards were added to the site: /h/ - Hentai on October 3, /c/ - Anime/Cute, /d/ - Hentai/Alternative, and /y/ - Yaoi on October 6, and then, finishing off the initial "board spree", /s/ - Sexy Beautiful Women and /g/ - Guro (now defunct) on October 9. Around a month later, on November 8, 2003, /a/ was created to provide a worksafe and anime-focused alternative to /b/.[1]
On November 17, 2018, a few years after 4chan's ownership changed hands from moot to Hiroyuki Nishimura, all worksafe boards on the boards.4chan.org domain changed to the boards.4channel.org domain.[2]

Mai Waifu
The phrase "Mai waifu," used by anime fans to refer to a fictional character that they feel strong attraction to, has been reborrowed from English to Japanese back to English again:
English: | My wife | → | Japanese: | → | English: | Mai waifu |
It entered English-language fandom in the early 2000s through a scene in Azumanga Daioh in which Mr. Kimura refers to a woman in a photograph as "mai waifu," and was then popularized on /a/.[3]
