The Beginning
I saw my first fanvideo sometime early in 2005. I had just seen The Phantom of the Opera with Gerard Butler and fell in love with the movie and the actor. I went online to find out more about both and came across Gerardbutler.net. They had a fan video section [1] and I was curious about what 'fan videos' were. The first one I downloaded was Wicked Games by Samantha Reynolds to the Phantom of the Opera and it totally blew my mind. My favorite scenes from my favorite movie edited together with a song I loved! After that I downloaded every fan vid I could get my hands on. It was so exciting to be able to explore the movie and characters so deeply, in a community of people that loved them just as much as me. GB.net was my introduction to online fandom and how the web can connect us all, even for interests as unusual as one small actor or movie. It was also a revelation to realize that the fans can interact with the movies or shows that we love in such a creative way by shaping them how we see fit.
My Fan Videos
You can find my vids at My AO3 account or My LiveJournal . I finished my first vid at the very end of December, 2005 for a Gerardbutler.net fan video contest. It was Wind of Change for the movie Dear Frankie. I had caught the vidding bug and was constantly thinking of songs I could vid, ideas for vids, special effects I might try. I evaluated every song I heard on the radio for vidding possibilities. Since then I've done vids for The Phantom of the Opera, The Lord of the Rings, 300, and another vid for Dear Frankie. Vidding takes me a long time, so I haven't done as many as I'd like to, but I still have many ideas!
Fannish Activities
I make vids on occasion, view and comment on other's vids and read and comment on fic on occasion. I keep a rec list for Vids and Fic at my LiveJournal. I've submitted my vids to several contests, including three at Gerardbutler.net, Endless Passion Video Awards, The One Ring Creation Entertainment Convention, Music In Motion Awards and Driver Picks the Music Vidding Awards. I started and maintained the Gerardbutler.net Fan Video listing for two years, which includes all the videos currently posted to the forum. In 2009 I went to VividCon for the first time, and had a blast. I have also supported the OTW through monetary donations, though one day I'd love to be able to donate my time as well.
