REPO! The Genetic Opera is a rock-opera slasher film based on a short play by Darren Smith and Terrance Zdunich. It has been likened to Sweeney Todd and Rocky Horror Picture Show, and stars Sarah Brightman, Anthony Stewart Head of Buffy, Ogre from the band Skinny Puppy, Paul Sorvino and Paris Hilton. It is produced by Lionsgate Films and was released to selected theaters in November 2008.
Because the movie was facing such a limited release, its director, Darren Bousman, encouraged fans of the film to upload fake soundtrack files onto torrent sites in order to deter illegal downloads of the music, fearing that it would hurt sales of the soundtrack, and by extension the film. He has since apologized.
Plot Synopsis
In the year 2056 – the not so distant future – an epidemic of organ failures devastates the planet. Out of the tragedy, a savior emerges: GeneCo, a biotech company that offers organ transplants… for a price. Those who miss their payments are scheduled for repossession and hunted by villainous Repo Men.
This is not your parents’ opera... [1]
The Repo! Army
The Repo! Army is a name that the fans call themselves under a collective banner, the way a Star Trek fan is known as a "Trekkie".
In an effort to gain a wider release for the film, the Repo! Army regularly engages in free promotion for the film through letters to Lionsgate Films, fan art, fan videos and flyers. Their efforts have paid off as the original release of the film has grown from six theaters to ten, and possibly even in the future.
Fanworks
Some of the fandom's fanfic is collected in The Genetic Archive, which opened in December 2008.
