Dream or Dream Sequence is a storytelling trope where the character in question has dreams (awake or asleep itself), where their deepest desires or fears are manifested.

Difference from "Flashback"

Flashback is when a past event is recalled by the character in question, like a memory being relived before their eyes. Therefore, it differs greatly from the dream trope, where the person imagines something that did not actually occur, or sometimes it anticipates something to come, as in a vision.

Used as a "What If

As a "safe" way to explore a difficult scenario...

"Kirk experiences a very disturbing dream that leads him to reconsider his attitude concerning his first officer and best friend." -- summary of A Strange & Beautiful Flower, a K/S story.

[…] I would take the time to give all you huge Rocherolle fans my opinion on 'The Offspring' so far.

I started […] about two years ago thinking part three was the end. I am so glad that I was wrong. I started part four the moment it was posted, and was immediatly drawn into it by the symbolism portrayed through Lily. Her dream sequence is magnificent, a very creative literary mthod that Kelli quite often uses in her storys.[1]

Seen as a Bit of a Cheat

There's a misleading, steamy dream sequence [in Hell Hath No Fury ], but the hottest it really gets is a chaste but warm hug. [2]

How does it feel to have read a piece of media so poorly that the first scene of the new season [of Our Flag Means Death ] openly mocks that last point with an absurd dream sequence showcasing how insane that take is?[3]

Can Be Confusing

Also, I was quite confused by the dream sequence on page 140, and honestly did not know what was happening or how it fit in the story until I read the entire story a second time. [4]

Fan Comments

I also said I wouldn’t allow myself the easy out of letting the story turn out to be either a holo-story or a dream sequence. [5]
