In K-pop fandom, Bias refers to a fan's favorite member from a particular idol group. This colloquialism is extremely common within fandom and is used frequently by international fans. The term itself has no set meaning, though is typically synonymous with the word 'favorite'.

Sherry Tucci, a journalist from The Daily Dot describes 'bias' as the following:

If you tell someone you’re a K-pop fan, be prepared to answer the inevitable question, “Who’s your bias?” In a group, there may be anywhere between four and 13 members, but your bias is simply your favorite. Same goes for a “bias group”—it’s the group you love the most in K-pop.

Beware of the bias-wrecker also. It’s a common term K-pop fans use to describe the one member of the group who makes you question your love for your declared bias.[1]

Types of biases

A fan may have several biases from different groups, and so additional terms have been coined to describe different types of biases.

  • Ultimate bias: This is sometimes abbreviated as 'ult bias'. Often kpop fans have one bias in each group they support, and so fans may have several biases. However, an ultimate bias refers to a fan's favorite bias in the entirely of kpop, not just in a particular group.
  • Bias wrecker: A idol in a group who challenges a fan's love for their actual bias. This can also refer to a fan's second favorite bias, or an idol who isn't a fan's bias but is very close to becoming a bias.
  • Bias group: A fan's favorite group.
