The Warden is the player character in Dragon Age: Origins, and Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening. There are a wide variety of Wardens, as the player can choose the Warden's gender, and one of six distinctive origins.

The Warden's given name is customizable. Fans normally refer to the Warden by their family name (which also differentiates their background). [1]

  • Human Noble: Cousland
  • Human Mage: Amell (cousin to Dragon Age II's Hawke)
  • Elf Mage: Surana
  • City Elf: Tabris
  • Dalish Elf: Mahariel
  • Dwarf Noble: Aeducan
  • Dwarf Commoner: Brosca

A player's existing Warden can be imported into Awakening, the DLCs The Golems of Amgarrak and Witch Hunt. A new Orlesian Warden can also be created.

Fandom

The Warden is a popular focus for fanworks, although some people are uncomfortable reading about a character who can quite easily serve as a self-insert. Fans develop headcanons for their Wardens, and can become very attached to their particular vision of the character.

The Warden's potential romantic partners vary depending on their gender. Female Wardens can romance Alistair, Zevran, or Leliana. Male Wardens can romance Morrigan, Leliana, or Zevran. These canon pairings are the most popular for the Warden, and of them Female!Warden/Alistair is one of the most common pairings on the Dragon Age Kink Meme. While there is no romance in Awakening, Anders is also paired with the Warden.

Cousland is one of the more popular origins, especially since a female Coulsand can marry Alistair if he is made king, and a male Cousland can marry Queen Anora. Some fans argue that the Human Noble origin is the most relevant to the overall plot of the game. [2]
