Fan Opinions

Fan opinion towards Total Drama Island has been generally positive. Many fans of previous seasons were disappointed the original casts weren't going to be a part of the reboot, though many liked the idea of a new cast.

I'm an oldschool Total Drama fan who has known Total Drama ever since TDI's premiere, and I also believe it's time to move on, I believe we've already seen enough of most of the gen 1 contestants.[1]

Another point of contention is the theme song[2], which was changed for the first time for this season.

Yet another was the skin color of MK, which many felt was yellow to the point it looked like she had jaundice[3]. Given her status as the only confirmed Asian character in Island, and Total Drama’s history with depicting Asian characters with yellow skin, (see Emma, Kitty, and Devin,) this upset many long-time fans who expected better from Fresh TV[4]. MK's skin color was changed when the series was released outside of Italy following fan-feedback.

There has also been some ship war between Bowie/Raj and Raj/Wayne. Bowie/Raj was Total Drama's first canonical same-sex relationship, and canonically, Wayne is outwardly a supportive ally to Raj realizing his sexuality and his long-time friend. Many feel Raj and Wayne works better platonically. This is sometimes called Rajcourse[5].

...The fact of the matter is, Bowie is our first openly gay character, and not only that, but he is black and femme. This is obvious from the literal moment he is introduced. We've already seen people react negatively towards him for all of these aspects (no, he is not stereotypical, he's just femme PLEASE learn the difference). By contrast, Raj is masc, Desi, and gay, the latter of which he discovers for himself during the season. It is incredibly important, in a world where the vast majority of gay rep consists of two white people (to the point where people make jokes about how so many wlw couples in media are just 'blonde woman' and 'brunette') that the first gay couple on this show is a black man and a Desi man.

Inserting Wayne into the equation then, or even removing Bowie from it entirely and shipping Wayne with Raj instead, is... well, it has it's implications. Again, I'm by no means accusing anyone of doing this with any ill will, but people are capable of harbouring biases that they may be unaware of that are still capable of impacting how they interact with media--and yes, this includes how people ship. The conversation around people shoving aside canonical interracial couples to ship two white people instead is as old as time, and while this isn't quite the same, it is still altering an interracial relationship between two non-white people to include a white man....[6]

pushing bowie aside so u can focus on an "unrequited" love a white boy has is not that hot of a take. i might just say its cold, even. absolute zero. if science found out how to translate the concept of "wayne has a crush on raj and is angsting over it in secret" into temperature theyd literally discover how to get to absolute zero.

#i do not like queer wayne hcs im not going to lie. let him be an ally#not to sound like a conservative old white man but not everyone has to be gay#rejoice in bowie & raj (whatever their ship name is) amen[7]

...-rajcourse is pretty dumb but i do love raynebow because last time i checked raj has two hands (but i do still respect rajbow/bowraj since yeah it's the first canon gay couple in total drama history, and that's a milestone) i think rayne, raynebow, and rajbow shippers should stop arguing and make out already...[8]
