A Vulcan student named Soril is studying at Starfleet Academy; he is having trouble understanding Humans & deeply respects & admires his teacher, Spock, who is spending a term there lecturing in computer science. Soril has had a particularly difficult childhood & Kirk's arrival at the academy precipitates a crisis for the young student when he realizes that the Vulcan teacher, whom he has unwittingly fallen in love with, is actually bonded to an emotional, if highly respected, Human. This is the kind of problem which only a relationship as unique as that which Kirk & Spock share could create & ultimately they must bear the responsibility for the effect that knowledge of their love has on the life of the young Vulcan. Their solution is arrived at jointly as, indeed, all important decisions should be. [1]
