Quantum Beast is a gen Quantum Leap/Beauty and the Beast crossover novel with five parts by Lee Kirkland.

Lee Kirkland, according to the notes on the online version, is a pseud for Sue Hernandez and Becky Bain[1]

It was the first Quantum Leap fanzine published.

I thought I might take this opportunity to recommend a few pieces for the interested reader. Lee Kirkland's Quantum Beast stories ("All's Well That Ends Well" and "The Waiting Room" and "Lover's Leap") are probably the best QL/B8bB crossovers on the market; even a non-B&B fan like myself should be able to thoroughly enjoy them. Quantum Beast: All's Well That Ends Well

Quantum Beast: All's Well That Ends Well was published in 1990 and contains 60 pages.

In it, Sam leaps into Vincent's body to rescue Catherine from Gabriel.

Yes it is what you think - and it's wonderful! Sam leaps into Vincent and has some trouble adjusting. In the sequel, Vincent, finding himself in the waiting room, thinks he's been captured for some scientific experiment. But growling at people doesn't have the same effect it used to. :-) [3]

“Quantum Beast" was the first QL zine I ever saw, and as I was also a B&B fan, I snatched it up at once. For the modest price, this is a terrific little zine, although you do need a familiarity with (or at least an interest in) the two fandoms involved. The nifty plot derives from the premise that Sam leaps into Vincent at the beginning of Beauty & The Beast's third season, and must rescue Catherine from her kidnappers before her baby is delivered into their hands and she is murdered. After all, Sam rights things that went wrong the first time around, doesn’t he?

The story is well told, and all of the characters, from both programs, are accurately portrayed. Sam’s point-of-view is used throughout, and it’s fun to watch as he and Al make discoveries about Vincent and the Tunnel world. The conclusion is paced excitingly, and I found this a satisfying read. In Lee Kirklands Fanzine “Quantum Beast: All’s well that ends well” springt Sam nun in Vincent, um in seinem Leben etwas “richtig zu machen, was einst falsch gelaufen ist”. Und was konnte in Vincents Leben falscher sein als Catherines Tod? Als Sam in Vincent “springt”, ist er nicht nur sehr erstaunt uber die Tunnelwelt unter den Strassen von New York, sondem noch viel mehr, als er das erste Mal in den Spiegelteich blickt. Al, der Sam immer als die Person sieht, in die er "gesprungen” ist, ist nicht weniger uberrascht. Da es uber Vincent und die Tunnelwelt naturlich keine offiziellen Aufzeichnungen gibt, die “Ziggy” (der Computer des Projekts Quantum Leap) benutzen kann, haben Sam und Al zuerst einmal Schwierigkeiten herauszufinden, was Sam uberhaupt “richtig machen soll”. Erst nachdem Sam Vincents Tagebucher gelesen hat und Al daraufhin einen Computercheck uber Catherine Chandler macht, wird ihnen klar, dass sie Catherines Tod verhindern sollen.

Da der Ort, an dem Catherine gefangen gehalten (und getotet) worden ist, Ja in den Akten der Bezirksstaats- anwaltschaft festgehalten wurde, ist es Sam und Al moglich, Catherine zu befreien.

Diese wundert sich in Anbetracht fruherer Erfahrungen nur etwas, dass “Vincent” die Wachen gefesselt und geknebelt hat. (Sam hat sie “nur” mit Karate auBer Gefecht gesetzt) Ausser der schon genial zu nennenden Art und Weise, wie in diesem Fanzine die dritte Staffel ungeschehen gemacht wird, gefalit mir an dieser Geschichte besonders die einfuhlsame Weise, wie Vincents Leben aus der Sicht einer anderen Person (Sam) beschrieben wird. Sam steckt sozusagen in Vincents Schuhen, und dabei erfuhrt man auch einiges uber Vincent, was sonst nicht so klar herauskommen wurde. [5]

Purists may obtain a two-page scene in which Vincent is reunited with Catherine after his return from the Waiting Room. The author states she’ll send it in return for a self-addressed, stamped envelope. [6]

Quantum Beast: The Waiting Room

Quantum Beast: The Waiting Room was published in 1990 and contains 42 pages and sparse art.

It takes place simultaneously to Quantum Beast".

In Sam's body, Vincent impatiently waits in the Quantum Leap headquarters for Catherine's rescue.

“The Waiting Room,” and tells the same leap from Vincent’s point of view, as he finds himself at Project Quantum Leap, in Sam’s body. Al’s role is much larger in this story, and he displays great sympathy for Vincent, who is struggling to adjust to a “normal” man’s reflection.

Kirkland’s second story is more of a character study, since Vincent can’t partake in the rescue, but must wait while Sam handles things in the past Vincent and the reader learn of his actions through Al’s reports. I liked this one too, as it is an excellent complement to the original zine. [7]

Das zweite Heft dieser Reihe “Quantum Beast: The Waiting Room’" handelt von den Erlebnissen, die Vincent wahend dieser Zeit im Warteraum hat. Fur alle, einschlieBIich Al, (der im Warteraum naturlich kein Hologramm ist) und auch fur sich selbst im Spiegel, sieht Vincent nun aus wie Sam Beckett. Also normal! Vincent und Al fiihren interessante und aufschluBrei- che Gespr&che uber Vincents Leben und seine Bezie- hung zu Catherine. Von Al erfahrt Vincent auch jeweils, wie weit Sam mit der Rettung von Catherine ist. Al schaftt es kurz vor Ende noch, Vincent aus dem Warteraum zu schmug- geln, so daB er sich die Wiiste von Nevada anschauen kann, doit ist namlich das Quantum Leap-Projekt beheimatet. Vincent bedauert es nur sehr, daB er Sam nicht kennenlemen und ihm danken kann.

Dieses Heft ist ebenfalls sehr gut geschrieben und von der Handlung her, so kurz auch die obige Beschrei- bung ist, fast noch besser als das erste Heft; allerdings sollte man das erste kennen, um dieses besser genieBen zu konnen. [8]

Quantum Beast: Lover's Leap

Quantum Beast: Lover's Leap was published in summer 1991 and contains 45 pages and sparse art.

Some years following the events of QB-1 & 2, Sam leaps into a helper but suffers a mild concussion, cutting him off from Al. Al asks Vincent's help to locate Sam.

QUANTUM BEAST: Lovers Leap hat im letzten Jahr auf der Tunnelcon II einen Preis fur “Beste Crossover-Geschichte” bekommen. nd obwohl die Autorin in diesem Heft schrieb, daB eft 2die letzte BATB-Quantum Leap-Crossover- Geschichte sein wurde, ist nun doch noch ein dritter Band herausgekommen. Und hier hat Vincent nun auch die Gelegenheit, Sam kennenzulemen, da er in 4 4 Quantum Beast: Lover’s Leap” in einen Heifer gesprungen ist. Dies ist auch die Gelegenheit fur Catherine und Vincent, sich fur Sams und Als Hilfe zu revanchieren, da Sam kurznach seinem ‘‘Sprung’ ’das BewuBtsein verloren hat und Al ihn deshalb nicht finden kann. Vincent hat naturlich gewisse Schwierig- keiten, Catherine zu erklaren, daB nicht er, sondem Sam siedamalsgerettet hatteund daB er sich mit einem Hologramm, daB Catherine nicht sieht, unterhalten kann. Vier Jahre sind seit damals vergangen, und Catherine und Vincent haben nicht nur einen Sohn namens Albert (statt Jacob), sondem auch eine kleine Tochter, die sie Samantha genannt haben.

Auch dieses Geschichte liest sich sehr gut und erfullt den Wunsch, den man nach den ersten beiden Hefte hatte, namlich, daB Vincent und Sam sich kennenler> nen und daB Catherine die ganze Geschichte erfahrt. [9]
