Preparations for Battle[1] is a story by fawatson written in response to the maryrenaultfics Halloween Challenge for 2009 (prompt: cobwebs).

It was followed the next year by Be Careful What You Ask For,[2] written in response to the Halloween Challenge for 2010 (prompt: lurking); and in 2011 by Answered Prayers,[3] written in response to the Halloween Challenge for that year (prompt: the unquiet dark).

The first ficlet shows the Morpheus, Lachesis, and Tisiphone deciding Kritias’ fate.

The second ficlet (462 words) shows Atropos culling Lysis in battle.

The third ficlet (534 words) shows the shade Alexias’ dead stepmother Arete outwitting Thanatos when he comes to cull Alexias after he is wounded in battle.

Comments by readers include:

Ficlet One:

  • I don't think there is very much more spooky than the thought of things hanging over me while I sleep...particularly when they're discussing my flaws, which are many. This one truly made me shudder - that careful acknowledgment Tisiphone as she lurks in the corner and the final image of the cobweb shrouded armour in the early dawn light...eek! my_cnnr

Ficlet Two:

  • I believe you're the first here at MRF to address that moment - and you've done it beautifully. TR will like, I know, that you were gentle with Lysis. I think he would ask "why", as well - as he'd lived, as long as we knew him, anyway, such an honourable and dutiful life. my_cnnr

Ficlet Three:

  • The characters are beautifully realised. trueriver
