lore.fm was a text-to-speech app that advertised itself as "Audible for AO3" and was designed for use by fans to listen to audio versions of fanfiction. The creator advertised that users could paste a link and it would generate an audio stream within a few minutes for listening, as well as features like a recap of weekly listening.
On 7 May 2024, the app was announced on TikTok, with a number of vague videos released alluding to the concept prior to an explainer video on 9 May. The app was released on 16 May, with invite codes used to limit the availability of the app. Fans have reacted to and discussed this app positively and negatively in spaces like TikTok and Reddit, with some fans happy about increased accessibility to audio versions of fanfiction, while others were concerned about creators having to opt-out instead of opt-in to allowing their works to be used on the app.
On 17 May, after only a day of the app being available, the creators of lore.fm announced in another TikTok, Archived version that they would be taking down the app due to the widespread backlash.
