Welcome to FanloreProject: YouTube Fandom! This project was created to expand entries (and create stubs) on Fanlore for YouTube RPF fandom, vloggers, web series, and other fanworks and fandoms found on YouTube. If you have ideas, missing fandoms or ships, want to add your own knowledge, or you're just really excited about YouTube fandoms, please join us!

What is YouTube Fandom?

YouTube Fandom covers a very broad category of subjects, from vloggers like Dan Howell and Phil Lester, to topic-based channels like Markiplier (gaming), Sorted (cooking), and Buzzfeed Unsolved (paranormal investigation). YouTube Fandom isn't really a fandom in and of itself; while a person might identify as part of 'youtube fandom', what that actually means is in constant flux as popular youtubers (and popular fandoms) change.

Because YouTube Fandom is so broad, we're defining it as: fandoms of people/channels that are primarily or currently on YouTube, fandoms of people who consider themselves or have considered themselves YouTubers, or fans who consider themselves to be part of the YouTube Community. If you're wondering if something 'counts', feel free to add it and make your case in this page's talk page.

Some Guidelines

Create stubs with reckless abandon. You may create new categories when you have or expect to have at least ten pages that fit within it (and the category fits within the existing site structure). Category titles should be plural, even if the word/phrase used to add it is singular. (See Help:Categories.)

If you create a stub, please put it in the proper section below so others can add to it. Also add "{{stub}}" (minus the quotations) to the top of your article, to add it to stubs in need of content on the wiki!

If you can, please check the Fandoms by Canon Type before creating new categories. The Fan Activities category may also contain pages.

If you are able, make redirects as needed so that people looking for familiar terms can find them. Our guide on redirects is here: Help:Redirects.

If you need formatting help, you can check out our helpful cheatsheet!

We have Template:VideoEssay for any video essays you might want to document on Fanlore and Template:Video for any important videos in youtube history you might want to document!

Fandom Specific Guidelines

Some of these fandoms are a bit complicated and have overlapping pages and related content. We've crafted content editing guidelines for the harder to organize fandoms, organizations, and pages. These guidelines are not set in stone and are to help, not hinder. As things are added, we may need to adjust them to better reflect the living nature of this project and the wiki itself. If you have any questions or additions, please feel free to bring them up on the talk page.

Dan & Phil Guidelines

If you add a new Dan and Phil-related page, please add it to Category:Dan and Phil.

Things that go on Dan and Phil:

Things that go on Phandom (YouTube RPF):

  • Canon history of Dan & Phil from their meeting and early collaboration, with the phandom that formed around their friendship and content
  • gen Phil & Dan fandom history; people who consider themselves "phans" or "phannies" but not (or not entirely) shippers

Things that go on the Phan (pairing) page:

  • History of Phan shipping & tinhatting
  • Information regarding Phan-shippers
  • links to Phan groups/discussions/directories/etc.
  • Phan (Dan/Phil) fic

Rooster Teeth Guidelines

If you add a new Rooster Teeth page, please add it to Category:Rooster Teeth.

Things that go on Rooster Teeth (company):

Things that go on Rooster Teeth RPF:

Things that go on Achievement Hunter:

  • For specifically AH fandom stuff, including RPF
  • Fake AH Crew
  • X-Ray & Vav
  • RageHappy (in respect to how it's not just mavin)
  • Minecraft LPs
  • Tropes associated with AH

Some Things to Keep in Mind

  • Information for new editors can be found in our New Visitor Portal. Among other things, it explains how to make an account, how to start a new page, and includes a lot of other helpful information.
  • Discussion on the talk page is encouraged, as is discussion on individual topic talk pages.
  • All edits, whether big tiny, or in-between, are welcome.
  • You don't have to be an "expert" on a subject. Adding what you know and feel passionate about are pieces of the puzzle, and ones that hopefully inspire others to expand on the topic.
  • All typos, mistakes, and errors are easily corrected. Don't let perfection hobble you.
  • Remember that Fanlore, like all wikis, is a collaborative effort, and may be edited by anyone.
  • Pages are not "owned" or controlled by any single person or group of people.
  • Pages and the information on them are only as robust, encompassing, and accurate as the information added by interested and enthusiastic fans like you.
  • Fanlore practices and encourages a Fanlore:Plural Point of View.
  • Please practice self-care and do not force yourself to write about upsetting or triggering content. If there's something that you believe needs editing or adding, feel free to contact punkpixieprince.

Project Badges

If you have added your name to the project participant list and contributed several edits, a badge may be awarded to you by Fanlore Policy & Admin which will be displayed on your user page, similar to Fanlore Challenges like April Showers or June Bloom.

Requests for Links or Pages

  • Check out the wishlist for ideas on what's popular and needs editing!
  • Define all the terms we have listed below
  • Fill in some gaps on early Phandom
  • add stubs for all the red-linked pages on YouTube RPF
  • add a separate page for the history of YouTube Abuse
    • There's the history of Youtube Abuse, the 2014 Youtube Abuse Scandal, and a page more about things like Elsagate (Abuse on Youtube)
  • add red-links from in the pages that need work
  • add various pages for YouTube BNFs including
    • lnr
    • smushfaace
    • SevenAwesomeSlashers

Project Scope

There's a bunch of different topics & fandoms that can fall under the purview of YouTube Fandom. For simplicity's sake, we've organized them into some smaller, hopefully easier to digest, groups. If you know of something that could qualify as YouTube Fandom (check the What is YouTube Fandom subcategory for details) and needs a page (whether it's a topic, fandom, site, glossary item, or community), add the links below to the relevant category. If your item isn't easily added to the subcategories, infobox, or Topics page that we have available, feel free to ask either project lead (punkpixieprince or flyingthesky) for help.

See Research for linkdumps and other research, and Topics for more extensive projects.

YouTuber Groups

This category is for groups that produce or produced multiple shows, over several different youtube channels, because they need multiple related pages. It has been moved to the Topics page.

Fans and Fandoms

  • Currently the issues with Fourth Wall in the fandom is under that page. Move to new page Fan vs Friend Paradox
  • Punks in Fanworks mentions youtubers reacting to themselves as punks, but could use some expanding!
  • Reader-Insert lacks ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING about it in relation to RPF fandoms, which is wild because that's basically RPF's widest genre.
  • Similarly, Imagines completely ignores the proliferation to Wattpad and makes it seem like a music fandom thing when it also appears frequently in YouTube fandoms.
  • I mean if you super fucking want to flesh out that page, there's also imagines on AO3 and, uh. YouTube itself.

Pages That Need Work

There's a few pages here that are almost entirely complete and only need minor edits, but most need to be created or heavily expanded. Tumblr Fandometrics Year in Review(s) have categories for Web Series and Web Celebrities which can be a good starting point if looking for popular youtube people and shows.
