I have been involved in fandom in some way, shape, and form since the late 1990s all the way to the present. I’ve been a fanfiction writer and role-player for years.

Now, I am interested not just in writing fanfiction, but also in helping to preserve and legitimize it as a transformative expression of creativity and literature.

Fannish History

When I was a teenager, the very first fandom I became involved with was an anime called Science Ninja Team Gatchaman. I discovered this series in 1997 and wrote my very first fanfictions for it.

(Unfortunately, many of these early writings were lost over the years with the decline/disappearances of website hosts like Geocities, which were popular back in the day.)

During my junior and senior year of high school, I was also involved with anime and mangas like Sailor Moon, Dragonball Z, X/1999, Magic Knights Rayeart and Ranma 1/2. For these series I would occasionally write fanfiction and draw fanart, though much of it was kept just to myself or shared with friends in my school.

During the first decade of the 21st century, I went to college and branched out to other fandoms and more collaborative forms of fanfiction writing. Far as fandoms went, I became more interested in video games, particularly the Final Fantasy series, Kingdom Hearts, and Warcraft to name a few. My interest in anime/mangas grew as well, and I began to follow series like Fullmetal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop, Inu Yasha, Bleach, and Weiss Kreuz. Though I wrote a few one-shots and a couple of unfinished multichapter stories under the handle "HourglassThorne" the majority of my creative fandom writing was on LiveJournal and GreatestJournal RPGs. It was on LiveJournal and GreatestJournal that I was introduced to journal-based roleplaying games. Those games were primarily set in Final Fantasy (Square Enix) fandoms. After a year of just being a player, I branched out and tried my hand at GMing two games I created and ran on my own.

From 2010 to the present, my focus on fandom has been solely on writing fan fiction. My primary fandom to date is Batman (specifically anything regarding Tim Drake/Red Robin prior to the DC “New 52” reboot), although I am interested in other fandoms as well. I just don’t write in those fandoms (yet) unless they’re part of a crossover. Though I am interested in reviving some type of collaborative role-playing/writing with fellow fans, I have yet to find a viable venue for such an activity.
