The Mirror of Maybe is an in-progress Harry Potter fanfiction story by Midnight Blue. The first chapter was posted in March 2002, in the midst of the fandom's Three-Year Summer.[1]

The story has not been updated since December 2006, when the 20th chapter, "Missing Muggle," was posted. [2] Though she has not posted for several years, Midnight Blue assured fans in November 2008 that she had not abandoned the story and intends to eventually finish it.[3]

Premise

The fic involves a relationship between Severus Snape and an adult Harry who disguises his teenage body with a spell that makes him look older. The reason for the subterfuge is that Harry accidentally spent years in a mirrorworld without anyone noticing and after that the age of his body and his lived experience don't match up anymore. No one knows, not even Snape, who isn't aware that his lover is Harry Potter.

Though the summary states that it is "set after Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and as an alternative to the events detailed in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince," it was not deliberately written as an AU, but rather followed the all the canon published before the story was started and was jossed by the subsequent novels. This was misinterpreted by an article titled "Harry Potter and the Fan Fiction Phenomenon," which used it as an example of an author ignoring canon she dislikes:[4]

It may be that as the fans outstrip HP in their own social and emotional development they find his reactions in later books increasingly unbelievable, and/or out of character with the HP they felt they knew. Thus they develop an alternative ‘Harry’ in fanon. Some FF authors identify in advance which books they accept as canon, and which they have decided to ignore. For example, popular FF author Midnight Blue gives the setting of her evolving FF The Mirror of Maybe as “after Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and as an alternative to the events detailed in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, [this] is a Slash story involving Harry Potter and Severus Snape”.
