Jane the Virgin is an American romantic comedy-drama telenovela developed by Jennie Snyder Urman. The series debuted on The CW on October 13, 2014. With a shortened fifth season, the series ended in July 2019, after having aired 100 episodes. It is a loose adaptation of the Venezuelan telenovela Juana la Virgen created by Perla Farías.

Overview

Set in Miami, the series details the surprising and unforeseen events that take place in the life of Jane Gloriana Villanueva, a hard-working, religious young Venezuelan American woman whose family tradition and a vow to save her virginity until her marriage to her detective boyfriend are complicated when a doctor mistakenly artificially inseminates her during a checkup. To make matters worse, the biological donor is a married man, a former playboy and cancer survivor who is not only the new owner of the hotel where Jane works, but was also her former teenage crush. In addition to adjusting to pregnancy and then motherhood, in the initial episodes Jane is faced with questions about her professional future and the daunting prospect of choosing between the father of her baby or her boyfriend.

Fandom

Not many fans were that concerned for Michael after the Season 2 finale, since it was believed his death would put a permanent cloud over the show that would make it impossible to regain its light, peppy tone. However, after Michael's death midway through Season 3 and the 3 year timejump that followed it, many fans became divided on the subject. Some thought it was an effective move that was well foreshadowed and led to fresh new plots. Others thought it was a cheap ploy to pull at the audience heartstrings and was just pulled so Jane could end up with Rafael, although Michael's death had been planned by the creator from the start of the series and was originally supposed to happen mid-way through Season 2.

Michael's resurrection in the Season 4 finale was also controversial within the fandom, as some fans felt that it was unnecessary. Fans were also divided on Rafael in Season 5, with some considering his character arc to have been botched following Michael's return.

Essays and Theses

With the focus on non-traditional family dynamics and women of colour, Jane the Virgin was considered by many fans to be a culturally significant and feminist show. Aspects such as the Villanueva family structure, the portrayal of low-income struggles, the highlighting of Latinx characters and their struggles and triumphs are all seen as high points of the series. This has led to several pieces being written about the show analysing the intersectionality and the cultural value of the narrative.
