The Dragon Series is a long-running series of X-Files stories by Sheryl Martin. They feature an OFC named Jackie St. George.

At least one of them is part of a zine Dragons of All Sizes.

This series is mentioned in In TV's Dull Summer Days, Plots Take Wing on the Net and What Xena did during her summer vacation, 1997 news media articles.

Origins

So... where the hell did this yappy Canuck woman come from, you may ask... hell, been asking myself that for about three years now... gryn...

Jackie St. George came about as a result of the very early XF fanfic, where most if not all of the stories were more or less Mary Sue stories, with the author jumping into bed with Fox Mulder in one persona or another - not that there's anything wrong with that... gryn... but I was tired of reading those type of stories and thought to myself why there wasn't a strong female character who could be a friend to Scully; a pal to Mulder and not a romantic rival in any aspect of the word... maybe even encourage a romance between our two favourite FBI agents...

and still kick ass when she had to...

so here I am, walking my midnight rounds inside this large, empty warehouse and back along the outside in the coldest weather of the year and wanting to read about this type of character in my XF fanfic...

then this broad steps out of the shadows, calls me over and starts to tell me her stories about Mulder and Scully...

and the rest, as they say, is history...

and a lot longer than I planned - to be honest, I never intended the Dragons to go beyond one, maybe two stories at the most - at the end of the second one I felt the cycle had been completed. But the amount of mail suddenly told me that she had a few more tales to weave into this old woman's head, and she just moved right in on my life and just won't leave...

mind you, I also never set out to write Downtime as anything more than a single short story... gryn...

on the other hand, there's the Wookie... for those who don't know or haven't heard the story, a man once wrote an author a fan letter about some of her stories - mostly the Dragon series and the first original Downtime...

and one thing led to another and eventually words were exchanged (among other things... snicker...) and thus I ended up being engaged to a man who can rightly brag of courting two women - myself and Jackie...

but that, as they say, is another story - here is the entire collection of Dragon stories to date - I am still writing new ones, and hopefully as you dig through them you'll find the latter ones much better than the first few - I like to think that I've improved with age...

but thanks for coming along for the ride - hope you enjoy it for a long, long time...[1]

Sharing the Dragon

She was described in 1998 as "one of the most recognizable names in X-fic, who has won fan awards and been cited in numerous articles"; "author of the famed "Dragon" stories - her character Jackie St. George has actually been used by other fan writers, one of the highest compliments to a fanfic author." [2]

The use of her OFC, Jackie St. George, was not without drama:

Darned flattered [that my OFC, Jackie St. George, is used in other people's fiction]- as long as they ask permission!

There was an unfortunate incident a few years ago when I tripped over a Babylon 5/XF crossover that started off with Jackie being a Ranger - and NO permission. The disclaimer stated flatly that the author didn't bother to even TRY to contact me, since he was sure I wouldn't mind.

I did.

One fast e-mail later and he pulled the story from all the archives along with a long apology.

I hate laziness. One short email and I would have given permission gladly.

But I think it's pretty lame to assume anything, especially in fanfic.

Fan Comments

2004

Cheryl Martin posted an endless series starring a butch Mary Sue named Jackie Dragon (or something like that) who followed Mulder and Scully around on their adventures, beating everybody up. It was bad. No one noticed.[4]

Sheryl. And it was Jackie St. George, St. George being the legendary dragon slayer, thus the dragon references. Jackie was one of the earliest serious Mary Sues, right down to her psychic abilities.

But yes, I agree. Plus the ellipses, OMG THE ELLIPSES!!!11!11!1

Sheryl's very nice, and her other writing was generally fine, if generally best taken in small doses. But this series was just bad.[5]

What really annoyed me was that I enjoyed the rest of the fic - just skipping the Jackie bits. I liked how Mulder and Scully interacted and the plots were interesting. Just that blasted Mary-Sue.[6]
