The first work with the pairing tagged was posted to AO3 on 21 August 2019. As Tommy only appeared in flashback episodes before season seven, the pairing of Buck/Tommy was a rarepair prior to 2024, with just 17 works remaining in the Archive of Our Own tag posted up to Tommy's reappearance in season seven of the show on 28 March 2024. Some new fans of the pairing who explored the Buck/Tommy tag, found these older works and commented on them on social media, usually in a positive way or wondering how those authors feel now the pairing has gone canon many years later.

Tommy's return and the scenes canonising Buck's attraction to Tommy and the start of their relationship led to a massive influx of fanworks to the pairing tag on AO3. By 26 April 2024, Buck/Tommy had 1,003 fanworks tagged with their pairing on Archive of Our Own, which grew to 1,799 by 22 May 2024.
