Harley Quinn is a supervillain/antihero/occasional Batfamily member from the Batman franchise. She first appeared in Batman: The Animated Series, before making her way to comics, films, and eventually her own animated TV series.

She's somewhat of a fan favourite. Margot Robbie's portrayal of her in the DCEU has been especially praised, and was generally considered to be one of the best parts of the first Suicide Squad film.

She is a canon bisexual, and is popularly paired up with both The Joker and Poison Ivy, her canon love interests. She is also canonically Jewish, something that occasionally comes up in fics.[1]

Canon

Harley Quinn was originally created for the Batman: The Animated Series by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, first appearing in the Season 1 episode Joker's Favor (September 11, 1992). Due to her popularity with fans, she was later introduced into the actual Batman comic book series, in Batman: Harley Quinn #1 (October 1999).

Harley has continued to appear in DC comics and DC animated movies, as well as her own self titled animated series- Harley Quinn. She also has a role in the Arkham video game series. A character believed to be Harley also had a very brief cameo in the CW series Arrow.

In her first live action film appearance, she was portrayed by Margot Robbie in the DCEU film Suicide Squad. Robbie went on to reprise her role in Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), and The Suicide Squad.

Loving the dichotomy between Harley's introduction to the team in Suicide Squad where she strips down to her underwear in front of a bunch of leering men and Harley's introduction to the team in The Suicide Squad where she promptly announces she just took a shit. Says it all really.[2]

Common Tropes and Storylines

  • Dr Quinzel becoming Harley Quinn is a storyline that is often expanded upon in fanfiction. It is a common in Batman source materials featuring Harley Quinn, but it also appears in fandoms where this character hasn't appeared, such as Gotham and the Nolanverse.
  • Pregnancy fics are common given Harley canon grandchildren in the BTAS, and her canon pregnancy in the comics. Both of these events were mentioned in the source material, without been greatly expanded upon allowing creators to fill in the blanks.
