the future is female is a Haikyuu Genderswap fanfic by earlgrey_milktea, focusing on Hinata Shouyou.

Author's Summary

When 10-year-old Hinata was told that female volleyball players would never soar as high as their male counterparts and reach world-renowned status, she took that as a personal challenge.

Or 6 times other people found out that Hinata was secretly a girl and the +1 time she finally announces it to the world.

Contents

The fic is largely canon-compliant, following Hinata through the major events of the anime/manga, from joining the Karasuno team, to Nationals and the Olympics. It features several ships (including KageHina), however the author has mentioned that the endgame pairing is left ambiguous.

An interesting aspect to the fic is the inclusion of feminist themes, such as sexism in sports and the popularity of male vs female athletes. In the first chapter, Hinata recounts the event that made her decide to pretend to be a boy:

“I remember stopping my bike and asking the man next to me excitedly—is there a female volleyball team, too? Did they make it to Nationals, too? And he had looked down at me so skeptically and responded, ‘Yes. But the girl’s volleyball matches just aren’t as exciting. Who would want to watch that?’” Hinata glared down at her feet, as she repeated the words the man said to her all those years ago.

Author's Notes

According to the author, it started out as a crack fic that eventually turned serious and led to a lot of research being done to portray the situation in a realistic manner.[1]

Reception

As of March 2021, the fic has over 3000 kudos and 781 bookmarks. It has also been included in several users' collections as a rec.

Several comments praise the story for not falling into the harem trope which is common in works featuring a female Hinata.

Reactions and Reviews

it makes very good use of fem Hinata trope creating a very inspiring and relatable fic w/ well written characters. Everyone feels really natural and that their pov’s make sense and their relationships with Hinata aren't forced. I'm a sucker for interactions that I can believe. Even how ridiculous the situation may be, the story doesn't write it off so that Hinata is able to keep the secret by lucky coincidences. She actually struggles and sometimes wants to give up. (The angst is just one long tea sip & I love it) I like the later chapters more bc the author writes more of Hinata's character development in those than the beginning where she tries to figure out better ways to keep her secret which are funny and I enjoy it but it's angstier so I love it more. 10/10 would read again
