Jack Kirby (August 28, 1917 – February 6, 1994) was an American comic book artist, writer, and editor from New York City.
Perspectives on Fans
In the 1973 Marvel Collector's Handbook, an interview Kirby had undertaken was reproduced from the Rocket's Blast Comicollector (Issue TBD). He was asked his perspectives on fandom and the role of fans in the comic book industry:
What do you feel we the fans can do to help [the growth of the comics industry]?I think the fans, whether they're movie buffs or science fiction buffs or whether they are comic buffs, should make their likes and dislikes known. I think they should stick with the industry and point out things people close to the trade can't see. I think that's where the fans are valuable. I appreciate the fans in that respect and that they are really loyal. They should correspond as to their likes and dislikes now and what they'd like to see in the future. They're our barometer. And I think they should always remain that way.
Do you think the rapid increase in comic conventions around the country are [sic] helping?
Yes, I think they are. I think conventions are fine. I feel that they haven't been done well, but that if they are, they could be quite a force. I think they could be a great cultural force, if they're managed right. So far, I haven't seen any proper coordination. I've seen good, intensive planning, but somehow I feel that the most hasn't been made out of conventions. I think they can be run much better than they are.
What would you suggest to correct this fumbling?
I think the intents haven't been made public. I don't look at it as fumbling. I look at it just as inexperience and doing something new. I think as conventions continue and experience is gained, they're going to improve greatly to a point where they can really be enjoyed by a large amount of people. I feel that experience is going to do the trick and this thing about conventions is really going to blossom. I would welcome ANY conventions and bigger and better ones.
